Chill out this New Year's Day

8 amazing ways to chill out this New Year's Day

In just a few short weeks, 2021 will be done and dusted, and a new year will be with us once again. The country is opening up, but COVID and its latest variants are here to stay, so if you want to have a more relaxed New Year’s Day (or New Year’s Eve) this year, here are eight amazing ways to chill out and enjoy.

1. Explore Sydney

Sydney is without doubt one of the best places in the world to celebrate New Year’s Day and relax at the same time. After an exhilarating fireworks display on New Year’s Eve, there’s so much more to do when the sun rises.

You can chill out at the beach or take a cruise around Sydney’s amazing harbour. Or, taking a coastal walk or exploring a national park are relaxing activities to start the new year off by getting close to nature.

2. Fly over Antarctica

For a truly unique experience this coming New Year, a flight over Antarctica is definitely a bucket list activity. Departing Sydney on New Year's eve, you can enjoy a glass or two of champagne while you wait for the clock to strike midnight. It’s a long round trip (13 hours all up) but Antarctica will welcome you in broad daylight so you can enjoy the beauty of the ice formations, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. It’s not cheap, but there’s no better way to chill out on New Year’s Eve / New Year's Day! Limited seats remain departing Sydney on New Year's Eve (so get in quick), however that are flights departing all major cities early in the new year - check out the 2022 schedule here.

3. Surround yourself with Blue Mountains in NSW

If the mountains of Antarctica are out of reach this year, why not immerse yourself in the pristine beauty of the NSW Blue Mountains? It’s not too late to book a short holiday at one of the many excellent resorts. A great Blue Mountains way to start your new year is with some fresh air as you enjoy family activities such as horse riding, bush walking, or wildlife spotting.

4. Enjoy Sea Life in Melbourne

You’ll discover an amazing underwater world at Sea Life Melbourne and it’s great fun for the whole family. The facility was temporarily closed due to Covid-19 restrictions, but it’s open again and as long as you’re vaccinated, you can enjoy a wonderful and educational day.

Watching sea creatures in their (close to) natural environment can have a very calming effect, so take this opportunity to relax and chill while you check out the marvelous wonders of the sea. You’ll see turtles, penguins, and of course, heaps of different fish species including sharks.

5. Enjoy the taste of Tasmania

If you’re a bit of a foodie, the best way to really chill out on New Year’s Day is by heading to Hobart, where Tasmania’s Taste of Summer is on from December 28, 2021, until January 3, 2022.

Held at Hobart’s Princes Wharf, you can devour exquisite local delights like handcrafted premium cheese, local sea urchins, pear cider, and pinot noir. Grab your tickets early as it’s essential to pre-book.

6. Organise a family brunch

OK so this one may take a little effort, but if the whole family chips in, the food will be ready in a flash and you can all sit down to a lazy New Year’s Day feast. Follow up with a movie marathon and you’ve got a chill out recipe for success!

For your brunch, whip up some pancakes with berries, cream and maple syrup, a cheesy frittata, croissants and cinnamon rolls. Serve with fizzy champagne and orange juice mimosas for the adults and plain juice for the little ones.

7. Have a picnic at your local park

New Year’s Day is the perfect time to get your picnic basket ready and head to the park. If you’re stuck for food ideas, check out these delicious ideas from Country Living – our top tips are the roast beef baguette, the watermelon, tomato and feta salad and the cheese ball trio.

8. Have a DIY pamper day

Let’s face it, the first 2 years of this decade haven’t been easy, so this New Year’s day there’s nothing wrong with relaxing with a bit of DIY pampering. Light your best candle and soak in a fragrant bath by tossing in an essential oils bath bomb. While you’re soaking, slather on a hair mask and add a hydrating face mask and under-eye peel off mask. Add some relaxing music and a glass of bubbly and you’re in for the most chilled-out New Year’s day yet!

Have a Happy New Year!

New Year’s Day happens only once a year, so get ready to chill out and unwind before you go back to the daily grind!
