Mother's Day is just around the corner but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune to show mum just how special you think she is (unless of course, this is the year you want to go all out – if you do, check out our flexible mini loans that are simple, easy and quick).
We’ve scoured the four corners of the digital universe to find the best low cost Mother's Day ideas that you can make yourself and save a bundle!
Bath bombs
Help mum nourish and moisturise with these divine rose bath bombs! Mix together 1 cup of baking soda, ½ cup each of citric acid and corn starch, ¼ cup of milk powder with 3 tablespoons of epsom salts and then throw in a handful of dried rose petals (chop ‘em up if they’re a bit on the big side).
Next (in a separate bowl mix together 1 tsp of water, 3 – 4 tsp of almond oil and 15 – 20 drops of rose oil. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry then press into moulds and leave to dry overnight.
Luxurious, natural soaps
It’s easier to make your own soap that you might think! This is a cheat’s recipe but the end result is just beautiful and it’s one of the best Mother's Day gifts we can think of. It all starts with a couple of regular sized bars of fragrance-free natural soap (grab some at the supermarket). Grate them up and then add to a crockpot that’s been heated on the low setting. Add 30 – 60 mls of liquid (plain old water or try coconut milk, infused herbs or green tea). Keep stirring until soap has completely melted then remove from the heat and stir in your favourite essential oils. If you’re after a bit of texture, you can add some oatmeal or rose petals. Now just pour into moulds and leave to set for 24 hours. Job done!
Body Scrub
Give mum the spa treatment with this lavish body scrub – it’s like a tropical holiday in a jar! Just melt ¼ cup of coconut oil then add 1 cup of raw sugar (or white sugar will do) and mix. Next add 1 tbsp of shredded coconut for extra texture and 6 – 8 drops of lime essential oil. Mix together and you’re done! Just place into a jar and add your own label.
DIY gift basket
Gift baskets are always a thoughtful gift but when you buy them ready made you’ll pay 2 or 3 times more than the real cost. It’s easy to make your own and if you don’t have a spare basket lying around just head on down to the two dollar shop or your fave discount store and grab a gift box for a few bucks. While you’re there check out the candles, diffusers and essential oils on sale – they’re usually cheap but pretty good and they’re a great start to your gift basket. Throw in a few more of the things mum loves (don’t forget the chocolates!) and you’ve got yourself a personalised gift basket (or box!) that mum will love.
Love vouchers
If there’s one thing mums love it’s spending time with family so why not give mum something that’s straight from the heart. Make up a voucher for 4 hours spent together, with a tick list of things mum can choose from (walk on the beach, picnic in the park, shopping trip – you get the picture).
Pot some herbs
Everyone loves fresh herbs so why not surprise mum with her own indoor herb garden. Just grab some small terracotta pots from the hardware store and jazz them up with a little paint (spray paint in a can is super easy to use for this, just spray on some primer first). We think white looks amazing against the green foliage of herbs but any colour would work well. Now just put a different herb in each pot and place on a tray to give to mum on her special day.
