New Year's Eve

How to throw the best-ever New Year’s Eve party

With 2022 coming to a close, it’s time to start thinking about the next big thing – and that’s the New Year. After a turbulent few Covid years, 2022 was only slightly better thanks to stock shortages and killer inflation, so here’s hoping 2023 brings some positive change.

No matter where you live, the weather will hopefully be beautiful here on the last day of December - so if you’re planning an event, here are some fantastic ideas for hosting the best-ever New Year’s Eve party!

Decide on the venue

First things first! Before you do anything, decide where you want to hold your party. Many people think the best parties are held in a specific venue such as a resort, club, restaurant or bar. However, that can be pretty pricey – and throwing a party at your own home can still be equally amazing for a lot less $$$'s. It also means your guests will have more room to let loose as they see in the New Year. After all, that’s what parties are all about! So, with proper planning, this may just be your best-ever New Year’s Eve party.

Pick a theme

Now that you know where to hold your party, the next step is to pick a party theme. Think about how you want your guests to celebrate the night before 2023 arrives. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider:

  • Glitter and snow New Year’s Eve party. Yes, it’s hot and sunny here but channel your best New York vibe and add some liberal sprinklings of glitter and snow around the place
  • Movie theatre. Go all glamour and glitz with a movie theatre-style theme. Set up a red carpet and ask your guests to dress up in all their best finery. Party all night long at your very own Oscars after-party
  • Roaring Twenties. Ask your guests to dress up in flapper outfits, turn up the jazz, set up a flowing champagne tower and Charleston the night away
  • Enjoy a night of extravagance with you and your guests wearing beautiful masks at a masquerade-themed party

Glam up your drinks

It’s the last night of the year, so your basic beverages just aren’t going to cut it tonight!

Champagne cocktails are a must, and you’ll definitely amaze your guests with this beautiful but easy combination. All you need are brandy, champagne, sugar cubes, bitters, orange slices, and maraschino cherries. Here’s the full recipe.

And for anyone who’s not so keen on the bubbly concoctions, you can make sure their drinks look like they are ready to celebrate too by setting up a garnish bar so everyone can they engage in a little DIY glamification. Set out things like citrus slices, berries, olives, rosemary springs, mint and cinnamon sticks - so your guests can accessorise their own drinks.

Serve up some easy but delicious food

Of course, you can’t let the night pass without serving a range of sumptuous bites for everyone to enjoy. Food for thought - here are some easy finger food and dinner ideas that everyone can feast on:

  • Meatballs and haloumi wedges– they’re great at any time of the night and can be passed around on a platter throughout the night
  • Barbie - whether it’s chicken, burgers, seafood, steak, or whatever you fancy, it’s hard to imagine a New Year’s Eve party without a delicious barbeque feast featuring somewhere
  • Tacos – they really are an all-rounder. You can serve them as nibbles or as a main course, and you can have anything in them – beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and even vegetarian options. Here’s a recipe for Barramundi tacos that is full of flavour and quick to make
  • Desserts, of course! Make them yourself or buy them in - an assortment of cakes, flans, chocolates and fresh fruit will be great

Prepare some fun activities

It’s a celebration to welcome the New Year, so you want your guests to feel the vibe. Make sure they don’t get bored by preparing fun activities to keep them up and about during the party. Of course you need to set up a dance floor to keep the party alive all night long, but party games will keep everyone in stitches long into the night. Stuck for ideas?
