Six of the best mobile apps to check out in 2022

The mobile app industry is growing and developing at lightning speed, and the Google Play and Apple stores are overflowing with millions of exciting apps. Finding the best apps can certainly be difficult, to say the least - and more are developing as we write this. But we’ve been researching the latest trends and, in this blog, we bring you six of the best mobile apps to check out this year.

1. Calm

Calm is the ultimate relaxation app. It features mindfulness and mediatation techniques to help bring more clarity, joy and peace to your daily life. With sleep stories, breathing programs and relaxing music, it's the perfect way to de-stress and take a moment to prioritise your well-being.

Calm is free, with in-app purchases available, and you can get it at the Apple Store (for iPhone users) or at Google Play (for Android users).

2. Darkroom: Photo and video editor

If you’re into photography and own an iPhone, this is one of the mobile apps you should check out in 2022. It’s efficient and sleek, making you want to dive in and edit your images.

The free version includes all of the tools you need to bring your photos to life, and you can customise the blur in your portrait photos, or the brightness, contrast, and saturation of your foreground and background separately.

Darkroom is free, with in-app purchases available and you can get it at the Apple Store. No iPhone? Check out a similar app for Android.

3. Kik

While Facebook messenger remains the number one messaging app, there’s a fast-rising mobile app that may just give it a run for its money, Kik isn’t just a messaging app - you can also connect to your social network through features such as video, sketch, bot search, or group or friend code scanning.

It also has a gaming feature, making it most appealing to the younger audience. What’s more - it doesn’t require you to give away your phone number – all you need is a user name to get connected with your family and friends.

Kik is free, with in-app purchases available, and you can get it at Google Play or the Apple Store.

4. DuckDuckGo

If you’re online all the time and tired of being tracked by advertisers or maybe even hackers, then DuckDuckGo is something for you to catch. It’s a minimalistic browser that keeps all your online activities private.

It automatically defaults to the strongest encryption of whatever site you visit. You can wipe your browsing history with a simple tap of a button, and it’s compatible with many devices, including PC, Mac, Android and iOS.

DuckDuckGo is free, with in-app purchases available, and you can get it at Google Play or the Apple Store.

5. Houzz

If you love interior designing or if your home could do with a bit of a makeover, then Houzz is the mobile app you need this year. Its’ database contains over 19 million photos to give you heaps of new ideas for your new home decor. You can even use those images to sketch and share.

But the best thing about it is that you can use its augmented reality tool to view the furniture or materials you want to buy using the app itself. While it may not be an app everyone needs, it’s definitely pretty awesome if you’re thinking about some home remodelling.

The basic version is free and you can get it at Google Play Store.  Sorry there’s no Apple version but if you’re an iPhone or iPad user, try Home.

6. The Sky by Redshift: Astronomy

Do you want to see the stars and planets up close and personal? Then this new mobile app is something for you to catch right away. Simply point your smartphone to the sky, and the app will tell you what constellations, planets, and stars you see.

It has marvellous graphics to make you feel like you’re actually among our galactic neighbours, and you can tap on each object if you want to learn more about it. You can even see how the sky looks differently from night to night.

With over 9,000 stars, 88 constellations, hundreds of comets, asteroids, moons, or even deep-sky objects, this Android app is perfect for those who love astronomy.

The app is free with in-app purchases, and you can get it at the Google Play Store and the Apple Store.
