Spring clean

Spring is in the air - so it's time for a spring clean

It might not feel like it, but spring is in the air, and you know what that means – it’s time for the annual spring clean! It’s a great time of year to cast off those damp and musty shades of winter and breathe some fresh new life into your home. Whether you do it yourself or get some help from a professional cleaning service, there’s no time like the present to start planning.

Spring cleaning means cleaning every single part of your home, top to bottom and side to side. It can include cleaning walls, windows and window frames, floors, carpets, upholstery, appliances, and all surfaces in all rooms.

If it looks too much for you to do on your own or you can’t talk your family members into lending a hand, your best option may be to hire a professional cleaning service to do some or all of the work for you.

However, if you want to take on the challenge yourself, make sure to prepare your checklist. Here’s, our checklist for doing your spring cleaning right.

The bedrooms

Pay extra attention to your bedrooms when you spring clean – it’s important for your health and well-being given you spend so much of your time there. As much as you do regular cleaning, there will always be areas where dust and dirt have accumulated. Here’s what to do:

  • Remove your winter bedding, wash, dry and pack away
  • Clean the ceilings and fixtures, such as fans and lights
  • Remove curtains and wash them
  • Vacuum the mattress and turn it over
  • Move any furniture so you can clean underneath and behind
  • Clean the drawers and remove items you don't need anymore
  • Check your wardrobe and sort them according to keep-donate-throw piles
  • Declutter the furniture, remove what you don't use, and clean those that remain
  • Wash windows
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum the floor, including under the bed
  • Cover beds with fresh and clean summer bed linens

The kitchen

We know you clean your kitchen after each use, but your kitchen spring clean is going to take it to a whole new level:

  • Wash your kitchen walls with hot water and lemon or orange-based cleaning products for a fresh smell
  • Declutter your pantry, throw out any expired items, and reorganise the rest
  • Check your refrigerator, discard any expired foods, and wipe over the insides, shelves and baskets
  • Defrost your freezer, discard any expired foods, and wipe over the insides, shelves and baskets
  • Clean or wash all appliances, including the cooktop, dishwasher, coffee maker, microwave, and oven
  • Sweep, scrub, and mop the floor
  • Clean and reorganise the cupboards and drawers
  • Polish tapware, knobs, and sink
  • Collect any rugs, wash, and dry them
  • Wash all kitchen bins with hot water, lemons, vinegar, or soda

The bathrooms

Bathrooms obviously need regular cleaning, but as the spring season approaches, you need to do more, as mould and bacteria may have made an unwelcome appearance during winter. Here’s what to do:

  • Empty your bathroom so you can thoroughly scrub and wash the ceilings, floors, windows, and toilet bowls
  • Clean any blinds, shutters or curtains
  • Clean the bathroom cabinets, remove expired medicines or cosmetics, and reorganise the contents
  • Remove the shower curtain (if you have one), wash, dry and re-hang
  • Deep clean shower heads and tapware
  • Spray bleach or mould killer on any areas affected by mould, let it sit for a while, and then wash or go over with a steam cleaner
  • Use a grout cleaner or steam cleaner to bring tired looking grout back to life

The living room

The living room is where everyone tends to gather after dinner, so it definitely needs to be included on the spring cleaning list:

  • Remove cobwebs and dust the fixtures, like electric fans and lights
  • Dust the ceiling, walls, and wall corners
  • Remove the curtains, wash, and replace them
  • Wash the windows and wipe dry afterwards
  • Give the carpet a good shampoo or steam clean (you can hire a machine if you don’t have your own)
  • Vacuum the upholstery, including sofas and chairs
  • Clean and polish furniture

It’s time to start that spring clean now!

Have you noticed how much dirt and dust accumulated over the winter? If so, then it’s time for you to spring clean now. Getting started on our tips above won’t exactly make your spring cleaning a breeze, but if you tackle one room at a time, you’ll be glad once your house is transformed to a clean and sparkling new version of itself!
