How to occupy the kids this summer

10 fun things to keep the kids occupied this summer

Summer’s almost here again, and before you know it’ll be school holiday time and it won’t be long before boredom sets in with the kids. So, if you’re thinking about how to keep the little ones occupied this summer, here are our top ten boredom-busting fun things to keep them happy.

1. Movie night in the backyard

Summer is the perfect time to put up a mini-movie theatre in your backyard when the stars shine the brightest. Use a white sheet for your screen and organise a table for some yummy snacks and drinks. You’re all set to keep kids and adults entertained for a few hours.

2. Backyard camping

While you’re at it, why not spend the night with your kids in your backyard after you’ve watched a movie or two? Set up a tent and let them fall asleep while gazing at the stars. It sure is one of those fun experiences that the kids will love. Fill the tent with creature comforts like cushions, pillows and soft quilts, and add some string lights and soothing music.

3. The beach and the sun

If you’re one of the many Australians who live near the coast, then a day at the beach is definitely on the agenda during the summer holidays. Besides, it’s not only a fun thing to do. but also healthy as everyone gets some sunshine and saltwater on their skin (just don’t forget the sun block). The kids will enjoy loads of fun activities at the beach such as swimming, snorkelling, building sandcastles, beach cricket and frisbee throwing.

4. Water play at home

If the beach isn’t close or if you simply don’t have time to head to the beach with the kids, then it’s easy to have some fun water play in the back yard. Just prepare your buckets, tubs, cups, water balloons, water guns, or whatever safe things you have that the kids can use to get themselves active and wet on a hot summer’s day. It’ll be more fun with a sprinkler and a hose, and you can even go all out and set up a water slide for the little ones to enjoy.

5. Get them messy in the kitchen

One of the most fun activities to keep your kids occupied this summer is to let them learn a thing or two in the kitchen. The best way to begin is by teaching them to bake simple recipes like cupcakes or cookies. It’s not only fun, it’s educational too. But be ready to get messy in the kitchen because the kids surely will.

6. Nature walk

No matter where you live, there’s bound to be a nature trail somewhere close by where you and the family can enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to interact with your environment, and don’t forget to take some videos so you can look back at the fun time you all had.

7. Scavenger hunt

Nothing beats a good old scavenger hunt and, if you do it right, you can keep the kids occupied for hours. A scavenger hunt works well indoors as well as outside or at the park and you can get the kids really engaged by letting them interpret their own meaning to some of the clues – such as finding something that you can see through or that floats.

8. Arts and crafts

Getting your kids to work on projects with arts and crafts will bust the boredom and help them to explore their creative side. The options are limitless – but since Christmas is just around the corner, check out these awesome Christmas Crafts for Kids from Easy Peasy and Fun.

9. Backyard or picnic in the park

Pack a picnic basket full of goodies the kids will love – some freshly made sandwiches or wraps, cookies, fresh fruit, and drinks - then head to your favourite park. If you don’t want to leave home, you can also set your picnic up in your backyard. Spread a blanket and get ready for some fun-filled family time under the morning sun.

10. Local library

Most libraries run workshops, activities and events that are geared towards young and old alike, so make sure you check out what’s on at your local library. Don’t be surprised to find outdoor storytelling, toddler time, craft shops, technology for kids and even kids club events.

Have fun!

Summer is the best time of the year to let your kids get out and do the things they enjoy. The good part is that you can also have fun with them, and it can be pretty budget-friendly.
