Stop smoking

Three low cost tips to stop smoking and boost your savings

A pack of cigarettes in Australia costs between $25-$30 dollars; at a pack a day that’s an annual cost of at least $9,000! For those who do smoke, it’s expected that the cost is only going to continue to rise, so for smokers looking for ways to save money, this isn’t good news.

In addition to the habit being hard to quit (and expensive), if you opt for replacement products you’re still spending on nicotine products and still putting substances into your body that keep you addicted!

To take a different approach, here are three simple low cost ways to stop smoking and save money:

  1. Try nicotine / stop smoking hotlines: Smoking is a habit. To help break the habit, why not call a quit coach via Quitline on 13 7848. Or, if you prefer you could even receive support via text. For more information visit http://www.quit.org.au.
  2. Drink water: Not only is smoking addictive due to the nicotine, but another habit you have to break is the physical act of smoking as well. When you have the urge to smoke, take small sips of water until the urge passes.
  3. Call someone: While the quitting helplines are there, you may need more immediate help, or you could just feel better talking to someone you know. In this instance, call someone you feel comfortable talking to. You may even find comfort in talking to someone who you know has been successful at quitting smoking themselves.

Want to improve both your financial and physical well-being? It’s well known that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. Not only does it reduce your life expectancy but your quality of life as well. Getting help to quit smoking doesn’t have to be expensive - the most important thing is taking that first step.
