Skin care

6 essential skincare products you need to have in your bathroom

Many women (and let’s face it, men too) love to have their bathroom full of skincare products, while others are happy with just a few essentials. The reality is, it’s important to have a good skincare routine each day to keep the aging process at bay - but we know the range of lotions and potions on offer can be a bit overwhelming.

There are some skin care basics we should all include in our daily routine – so keep these skincare products on hand in the bathroom, because that’s where the magic happens for your skin.

1. Cleanser

Regardless of your age and skin type, a cleanser or two is top of the list when it comes to bathroom essentials. Cleansers remove deep-seated dirt that ordinary soap and water can’t. Using a cleanser before bed will remove all the grime that has accumulated during the day, including makeup and dust.

Using it in the morning will eliminate any night cream residues and other impurities you’ve captured while sleeping. Whether you choose foaming, milky, or oil cleansers, it’s important to note that they shouldn’t make your skin feel dry.

2. Exfoliant

Our skin cells’ natural renewal process slows down with age, causing the skin to look dry and dull. Exfoliants work at a deeper level than cleansers to remove dead skin cells.

There’s no hard and fast rule on how often you should exfoliate your skin. But most dermatologists recommend doing it at least once or twice a week – and if you’re a skin care die-hard, you can probably exfoliate gently every day. So, keep your exfoliant on your bathroom shelf at eye level, or in the shower so you won’t forget it.

3. Eye Cream

Yes, you definitely need a separate cream for your eyes. That’s because the skin around our eyes is much thinner than the skin on our face and neck. It also has fewer oil glands, so an eye cream will help to keep the area around your eyes moist.

Because the skin around your eyes is thinner, it’s also more prone to wrinkles, so it definitely needs more protection. Find an eye cream based on your skin type and specific needs. For wrinkle prevention, go for the one that contains Vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. And it’s a good idea to have a separate retinol-based (Vitamin A) eye cream to use before bed.

4. Serum

We all need a skin booster, so it’s an essential skincare product you must have in your bathroom. Serums contain more active ingredients than moisturisers, working a bit harder to resolve your skin issues, especially dark spots, pigmentation, and enlarged pores or fine lines.

There a plethora of serums available on the market, but you won’t go wrong if you incorporate Vitamins A, B & C into your routine. Vitamin A serum works to reduce wrinkles and sunspots, and should be used at night. Vitamin B helps to keep your skin hydrated; and Vitamin C increases skin luminosity. Use your Vitamin B and Vitamin C serums in the morning.

5. Moisturiser

As the word suggests, a moisturiser moisturises your skin to avoid dryness, keeping its natural glow and shine. But more importantly, it protects your skin from external irritants that may damage your skin. That’s why it’s essential to keep a good moisturiser in your bathroom all the time. Choose a moisturiser according to your skin type, season, and budget.

6. Sunscreen

If there is one skincare product you absolutely can’t do without, it’s a good sunscreen, and it’s important to wear it every day, especially if you’re out and about. Be warned, even if you’re in the car, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can burn your skin, which will make it lose elasticity, leading to premature ageing.

Brands for every budget

Finding the right skin care range can be daunting as there are so many brands (and so many claims!) available today, but here’s our pick:

  • For the budget conscious - try Natio, The Ordinary, Olay and Neutrogena
  • For good, mid-range products - try La Roche-Posay, Origins and Alpha H
  • For something a bit more luxe - try Skinceuticals, Dermalogica and Aspect
  • For a special occasion or if money’s no issue (we should be so lucky!) - grab yourself some La Mer or Sisley products. But brace youself – David Jones sells 60ml (that’s a bit over 4 tablespoons) of Lar Mer’s flagship product Crème de la Mer for a whopping $495 per jar, and Sisley’s premium 30ml Sisleya L’Integral Anti-Age Firming serum sells for an eye watering $630 each
