Let’s face it, housework is exhausting, tedious and downright boring, especially when you have children around who keep messing the house. No one wants to spend their weekends or days off cleaning the house or doing other household chores, but unless you can afford a regular cleaner, it’s a fact of life for many of us. But fret not! Here we present our top tips that will help you blitz through your housework.
1. Get those little helpers involved
Don’t bother complaining to your kids about the mess that they create in the house – get them to help with the housework instead. They don’t have to do everything but getting them to clean their own mess will teach them to be responsible young people. It’s also a great way to bond with them by doing those chores together.
You can also take this as an opportunity to educate your kids about the concept of effort and reward. Want some screen time on the iPad? No problem – just earn it by putting away those toys. New Xbox game to play? Awesome – spend an hour cleaning up your room and you’ve just earned yourself an hour of play time. It will make them understand that it’s important to work to get those rewards, plus it lessens your load, which has got to be a good thing right?
2. Quick-clean those toys
Toys can be a haven for dirt and bacteria but cleaning them can be a very time-consuming chore, so the next time your little ones’ toys are in danger of causing a viral outbreak, pop them in the dishwasher, and clean the lot in just one easy cycle.
3. Sanitise your sponges
If your cleaning sponges are a little dirty or smelly you can quickly sanitise them by saturating with water and popping them into the microwave for at least one minute. This helps to kill any bacteria that may be lurking in the sponge and means your cleaning will be much more effective.
4. Strategise
Before you embark on your cleaning mission, head into the bathroom first. Spritz your bathroom cleaner in the shower and squirt your bleach into the loo. Leave to soak and dissolve any bathroom mould and shower scum while you’re doing other chores. This will save you heaps of time as it’s lots easier to lift those marks and stains once the bathroom chemicals have had a chance to do their job and settle in.
5. Spread it out
Little and often is a great way to go, especially for those jobs that only happen once in a while. So instead of leaving the venetians for 6 months and then spending the whole weekend cleaning them, set yourself a task of cleaning one blind each week – that’ll keep them looking great and won’t take up too much of your time. To speed up the cleaning process, just wet an old sock, place it over your hand and then run you hand along the blind slats. Job done in next to no time.
6. Skirts and sockets
Want to know how to clean your skirting boards and plug sockets without really noticing you’re cleaning them? It’s easy – just wipe them with your feet (wearing a pair of old socks) when you’re on the phone. Just a slow wander around the house while you’re catching up with friends over the phone and that’s another job done. Oh - and those plug sockets – just swipe along the top with your finger to remove any dust when you plug something in.
7. Perish the pet hair
If pet hair on the carpet is the bane of your life, here’s an easy way to remove it! Just grab yourself a broom with rubber bristles and brush vigorously along your carpet. The pet hair will pile up super-quickly – all you need to do is collect it and throw it in the bin.
8. Declutter
The less you have, the less there is to clean so if your house is a shrine to your favourite obsession, now’s the time to put all of those bits and pieces into retirement. Put them in a box and store them in the garage or donate them to a new home – aim for the minimalist look around your home and cleaning will be a breeze.
