utility bills

Four ways to save on your utility bill this winter

Winter can be a tough time to keep your utility bill low - with the cold weather outside it is so tempting to crank up the heat to stay warm. Unfortunately, this can lead to an extremely high utility bill, leaving you out in the cold. Having a high utility bill doesn’t have to be a necessary evil though - see our tips on how to reduce your utility bills so you can save some money this winter.

  1. Heating. While this might seem obvious, almost 40% of household energy use relates to heating in the winter months. To help combat this, consider investing in the most energy efficient heater you can afford, and only heat the rooms that need it most, turning them off as soon as you leave the room or go to bed. Beware of inexpensive personal heaters as they can cost you a lot in the long run by using too much electricity. Overheating your home can also lead to a high utility bill, so try to keep the temperature set lower to save money.
  1. Don’t overwork your kettle. Whenever you put the kettle on to make a cup of tea this winter, make sure you only fill the kettle up with as much water as you need instead of filling it to the top. Though it may not seem like much, it actually costs more to boil a full kettle of water than running a ceiling fan for an hour.
  1. Cut down on your showers. Though there is a huge temptation to take a long, hot shower in the winter months, it can really add up. Hot water is one of the biggest culprits for high utility bills in winter. Consider installing an energy-efficient, often called “low-flow” showerhead to limit the amount of water you use, or simply try to cut down on your shower time to help keep costs down.
  1. Turn your ceiling fan onto winter mode. Many ceiling fans have a switch located above the blades that allow you to switch between winter and summer mode. What winter mode does is reverse the movement of the fan’s blades to push warm air at the ceiling down into the room and dissipate the cold air. This will help keep your home warm in winter without the use of a heater, and costs much less.
