Mother's Day 2020

How to make Mother’s Day extra special this year

So much for the classic dinner date out with mum this coming Mother’s Day. Thanks to Covid-19 and social distancing requirements, we’ll all have to celebrate it a little bit differently this year. A lot has happened over the past few months, but despite the current circumstances, you can still make Mother’s Day extra special for mum. So fret not - we’ve got your back! Here’s how to make sure mum has an awesome Mother’s Day this year.

Give her the gift of time

What better way to make mum feel extra special this Mother’s Day than to give her the most precious gift of all – your time. Unless your mum is older and in a vulnerable age group, you can still visit and spend quality time together. There are a variety of ways that you can do that:

  • Cook that Sunday meal together - Try a new recipe together or simply use one of grandma’s tried and true recipes. Keep the mood light and fun, and don’t forget to take pictures so you have some great memories you can look back at someday. You can even cook extra portions for the freezer so mum (or dad) can take a break from cooking during the week.
  • Watch a movie together - Get the popcorn and wine ready for some binge-watching with mum. Whether it’s her favourite movie or TV series, watching it together is certainly a great way for you to make her feel special on her day. Remember, it’s the quality of time you spend together that matters most.
  • Host a game night - Mother’s Day doesn’t always have to be an exclusive event. Hosting a game night for the family is sure to make mum very happy to see that you and the rest of the family are having a great time together. Just make sure to let her choose the games that you will play.

Give her gifts that will last

The global crisis may have ground many things to a halt, but it won’t last forever. Sure, you might not be able to take your mum out this Mother’s Day, but you can always give her gifts that will last a long time.

  • Coupons or vouchers - Give her a coupon or a voucher to her favourite restaurant or shop – you’ll not only give mum a gift she’ll love, you’ll also be supporting local businesses in these trying times.
  • Clean her house - Whether you do it yourself or give her a gift card to a cleaning service, mum is bound to be delighted that someone else is doing the cleaning for her - so she can put her feet up and continue binge watching the latest Netflix series.
  • Breakfast in bed - It’s a classic and it’s always effective. Your mum will doubtless be very happy to wake up to the pleasant aroma of freshly brewed coffee and her favourite breakfast. So make sure you get there early and don’t forget to bring the bacon and eggs!

Renew and grow your relationship with her

If you’ve been a busy bee all year, this coming Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to renew and grow your relationship with your mum, literally and figuratively.

  • Give her a bouquet that grows - Giving her a bouquet of her favourite flowers is sweet, but it’s even sweeter if she can grow those flowers herself. Australia is abundant with beautiful flowering plants that mum can grow and nurture in her garden so pick her favourite plant or colour to give as a gift this year. We’re pretty sure she will be delighted to cultivate and take care of any living bouquet that comes from you.
  • Create a herb garden - If your mum loves to cook, she will definitely love to have a garden close at hand where she can just reach out and pick the herbs she needs whenever she’s cooking. There are plenty of planter boxes available that are just perfect for herbs, and make sure you plant plenty of coriander, basil, parsley and mint, together with any other herbs you think mum will love. Don’t forget to label each herb and include instructions on how to best care for them.
