How to pay off unexpected bills

Some surprises might be welcomed, but when it comes to bills an unexpected expense can be financially stressful. Having a budget in place will help you plan for financial emergencies but if you need help paying your bills today, here are some options.

  1. Credit
If you have a credit card, then chances are you are already ready to use it for your bill payment. However, if you have already maxed out your card – the average Australian has a massive $4,300 in credit card debt with a national total of $32 billion owing - you may be looking for an alternative method. Similarly if you don’t already have a credit card and need quick cash then this probably isn’t the right solution for you. Typically you need a high income to be eligible, with a positive credit history and the approval time can be a bit long.
  1. Centerlink advance payment
If you are currently receiving Centerlink benefits and have a financial emergency than you might be able to get a payment advance to help you manage your unexpected bill. You will need to have been receiving income support for more than three months and not currently owing a debt to the Australian Government. To find out if you are eligible visit the Department of Human Services website.
  1. Sell something on Gumtree or ebay
If you have a smaller bill, you may want to consider selling something(s) that you don’t use anymore. An old mobile phone, a video game or maybe that yoga matt you never use. What you might consider junk, someone might consider worthy of a few coins – you’ll never know unless you try. The drawback to this is that it won’t generally provide you with large amounts of money and could take some time. Selling your old items for quick cash may still help you to manage your money for future expenses.
  1. Speak to your utility provider
If you can’t pay your utility bill upfront give your provider a call. They might be able to help you set up a payment plan. You may also be able to pay for a rebate or voucher that makes your bill more affordable for you. There are rebates available for gas, electricity, water and even telephone bills.
  1. A personal loan
If you have exhausted all your other options then a quick and simple personal loan can help you get cash today when you really need it. Made to help you out when you need a little extra cash, a mini loan can help you pay your bills on time.
