New moves to rev up your workout this winter

Sick and tired of the same old training regime, day after boring day?  Fear not – we’ve searched across the Internet to bring you the hottest fitness trends for 2018. 

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) 

HIIT is a training technique that involves bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by low-intensity active rest. It’s a great option if you’re short on time as most of these cardio workouts are done and dusted in 30 minutes. 

In this high cardio workout, the intensity during the work period is greater than 80% of your maximum heart rate, and the higher the better – you should feel like you’re working really hard. 

The best benefits of HIIT training come from its post-workout effect. It’s been shown to elevate metabolism for literally hours after your workout has ended, essentially turning your body into a fat-burning machine! 

Suspension / TRX Training 

If you’ve seen the suspension straps hanging from the ceiling of your gym but haven’t taken them for a whirl yet, now’s the time to give them a go! It’s a resistance based training method involving a system of straps and handles that let you work against your own bodyweight to give you an enjoyable but challenging workout.   

Suspension training is considered to be functional training because not only do you move forward and backwards, you can also move side to side and rotate. You can train every body part using suspension straps and your core is constantly activated in order to maintain stability, so it’s a great workout for your abs as well. 

Arakan 

Arakan is a Burmese martial art, which teaches awesome self-defence skills while increasing your fitness levels. It incorporates open hands, closed hands, fists, legs, elbows and knees in a free flowing manner. 

Movements include striking, deflecting, grasping and using your opponent’s momentum against themselves. Private and group classes are usually run outdoors and in all weather – that’s because Arakan is based on the premise that someone could attack you anywhere, any time, so it’s quite possible your training session could be held in the pouring rain (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it). 

Boxing 

Boxing is all the rage right now and whether you choose to slug it out in the ring, take some private boxing for fitness lessons or partake in a group boxing class, this is one of the best cardio exercises to get your heart pumping and your calories burning like there’s no tomorrow! 

Because it works most parts of your body, you get an all-over workout that improves heart health, tones your muscles, increases your agility, strengthens your bones and helps you to lose weight. 

Grit Plyo 

Grit Plyo is a group fitness class run by many gyms so you’ll probably find it at one near you. It’s a high-energy interval-training workout that harnesses the power and speed-enhancing principles of plyometric training to build the ultimate agile, powerful and athletic body. You’ll quickly test your comfort zone by getting into a fast and furious regime of explosive movements using basic equipment. 

You get maximum results in a shorter class time (usually 30 minutes), increase your strength and power, build an agile and lean body and improve your heart and lung health. What’s not to love about that!
