Spring is in the air; we’re heading into the last quarter of the year and it’s time to clear out those winter cobwebs and give the house a good spring clean. A little bit of know-how can make cleaning in tricky places a breeze - so you’ll be saying goodbye to all of that accumulated dust, mildew and other unpleasant nasties in next to no time!
Most of us hate the thought of cleaning the house but with Coronavirus restrictions and lockdowns becoming commonplace, cleaning is one activity that can help to banish the COVID boredom. Here are our top tips for spring cleaning those tricky places.
Blinds and shutters
Dust accumulates quickly on blinds, but the trick is to clean them dry. Use a microfibre cloth to wipe both sides, from top to bottom. And here’s an even better tip. Attach a clean, dry microfibre cloth to tongs. Clamp it to a blind to clean both sides at the same time. Voila! You’ll clean your blinds in half the time! Don’t forget though to vacuum the floor underneath your blinds to pick up any dust that fell while you were cleaning.
Outdoor furniture
Outdoor furniture takes a beating from the weather every day, and for most of us that furniture has probably been left untouched for the last 5 or 6 months. For the fastest spring clean start by hosing your outdoor furniture with water and then use a microfibre cloth and surface spray to wipe gently – even in those hard to reach places. Hose again with water then wipe over with an old towel to dry.
Dishwasher
The dishwasher is probably one of the most used kitchen appliances - and it’s also often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. The good news is you don’t need to buy those expensive dishwasher cleaners – just place some baking soda in the detergent compartment and run it through a hot cycle to remove any built up grime.
Shower heads
Clogged shower head? All those tiny holes can be tricky but with a little bathroom nous you can quickly get that showerhead sparkling like new again. Using a rubber band, fasten a plastic bag filled with white vinegar onto the showerhead. Let it soak for at least an hour then rinse it with warm water. No more clogs - you can now enjoy your shower at full blast!
Mouldy bathroom
Bathrooms can be one of the trickiest places in your household to clean. Even if you’re the most fastidious cleaner, there will always be places in the bathroom where mould and mildew grow. To easily remove this, prepare a solution of one cup of water per one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. Using a spray bottle, spray the mixture evenly on the affected areas and let it sit for at least 10 minutes. Scrub to completely remove the mould and stains, then rinse with water and wipe dry. An additional tip to avoid the mould from coming back is to spray the area with a mixture of 1 to 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 cups of water.
Oven
If the thought of the hard work required to clean your oven leaves you wanting to just close the door on the problem, here’s a simple trick to get the job done. Don’t waste your money on those toxic oven cleaners that leave a chemical smell for months after you’ve used them. The best oven cleaning hack is to mix together ½ a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to make a paste. Wearing gloves, spread the paste all over the interior of your oven, including the glass door (make sure it’s cooled down before you start). Let it sit overnight and then wipe with a damp dish cloth. You can also use a spatula to scrape any hardened areas. Next, spray with white vinegar – this will react with the residue of the baking soda mixture and it will start to foam, but don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Give it a final wipe down and you’re done!
