Declutter and spring clean

Spring has arrived - it's time to declutter and refresh

As we bid farewell to winter, the arrival of spring brings with it the opportunity to fling open those doors and windows, and let some invigorating fresh air flow through our homes.

It's also a great time to indulge in that time-honoured tradition of spring cleaning; to declutter and embrace a tidier, more organised living space. It may be a big job but don't worry; we've got some fantastic tips to make your spring cleaning a breeze!

Organise your schedule and tasks

Spring cleaning doesn't have to be an overwhelming task and you don't have to do everything in a day. Take a moment to plan and organise your cleaning schedule and set specific days or weekends to tackle different tasks. Consider breaking it down room by room so it's not overly arduous or time-consuming.

And if you have kids, involve them in the process by turning cleaning into a fun family activity - with the promise of a reward at the end of it. Or, plan some activities outside of the house eg send them to the movies, so you can focus on your spring cleaning jobs.

Reorganise your wardrobes and drawers

Spring is a terrific time to declutter and revamp your wardrobes and drawers, and you’ll probably be surprised at how many things you’ve accumulated over the past few months. As a general rule - if you haven’t worn something for over a year, it’s probably time to bid it farewell. The same applies to your kid’s clothes too. Since they grow so fast, consider donating or selling the clothes they've outgrown in a garage sale. It'll free up space and contribute to a clutter-free home.

Blitz those windows and doors

Next, it’s time to give your windows and doors some love and attention. Generally overlooked during regular cleaning, they may be looking a bit grimy. Use natural cleaning products like lemons, vinegar, and baking soda to wipe away the accumulated dirt on window frames and sills. And for glass panes, a squeegee will do wonders.

Refresh the bathroom

The bathroom can be the most challenging room to tackle during your spring clean, especially if mould has accumulated over time. Consider using a commercial mould killer or opt for proven DIY cleaning techniques using vinegar, lemons or baking soda.

Take this opportunity to empty your bathroom cupboards, drawers, and shelves. Discard medications that have expired and any items you no longer use. Give the hardware a thorough clean before you reorganise all the essential items you want to keep. Once your bathroom is back in tip-top shape, encourage everyone to follow a clean-as-you-go policy to cut your next cleaning times in half to maintain the bathroom's freshness throughout the year.

Deep clean your kitchen

Now that the bathrooms are sparking, move on to the kitchen for a thorough spring cleaning session. Check every drawer and cupboard, and remove any food items that are past their use-by date, any chipped crockery, or unused utensils. Wipe the drawers clean and reorganise the remaining contents for a cleaner, more minimalistic look.

Don’t forget to clean all your appliances, including the fridge and oven. For oven cleaning tips, check out our oven cleaning guide to make it look brand new again.

Dust away those neglected spots

Even with regular cleaning, some areas around the home tend to gather dust over time - and spring cleaning is the ideal time to address those overlooked spots. Dust off your cabinets, tables, chairs, ceiling fans, and skirting boards to get your living space fresh and sparkling clean again.

Give your home a little touch-up

Since you’re already engaged in spring cleaning, why not give your home a little touch-up? Discard any furniture and appliances that are no longer in use, and invest in new items to update your decor. A fresh coat of paint and new curtains can also work wonders in brightening up your living space.
