With the cold weather upon us this winter season, it’s hard to fight the urge to just stay in bed or curl up in some comfy PJ’s, and forget all about your exercise regime.
Winter’s also a time when we tend to eat more and indulge in calorie-laden foods, but the summer season is drawing near, and there’s definitely no better time to get your beach body ready - because everyone knows that summer bodies are made in winter!
Here’s how to whip that cold weather body into shape before the warm weather arrives.
Don’t hit the snooze button
As soon as your alarm goes off, try to jump straight out of bed - before your body realises how warm and comfortable it is and you’re tempted to stay under the doona. The second you hit that snooze button, you’ve mentally given yourself permission to keep on napping, making it really difficult to get up and start your exercise program.
Keeping your phone out of reach from your bed is also a great strategy to force you to get up and face the day. Many of us tend to look at our phones when we first wake up, and it’s easy to get distracted, so you end up staying in bed.
Start your workout plan
Now that you’re fully awake, it’s time to get out for a run, head to the gym or start your own workout plan. Is it possible to achieve a beach body at home? Of course! You don’t even need a full set of exercise equipment, because the tools you need are already lying around you. All you need is to trust in the power of bodyweight workouts.
If you have dumbbells, you can use them for a plethora of exercises good enough to make you sweat and tone up if done regularly. You can also use a chair and other furniture around to complete some triceps dips and incline push-ups.
There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube and cheap (or free) mobile apps available, so you can get some inspiration and training advice.
Eat sensibly
Whatever season it may be, a healthy diet should always be part of your daily routine in order to achieve and keep that summer body. But you don’t have to starve yourself. The idea is to have lots of healthy foods in your diet, not eat less.
Avoid drinking high-carb drinks, and eating sugary foods, and unhealthy fats. Instead, load up on low-calorie and healthy foods, such as fruit and vegetables, plenty of lean protein and good fats, such as nuts and seeds. Most importantly, avoid binge-eating completely. If you’re tempted to indulge, drink 500 ml (two glasses) of water – you’ll be amazed how much it takes the edge off your hunger.
Do some hot yoga
While getting plenty of resistance and cardio training is important every week, if you can squeeze in some yoga your body will thank you for it. And if you want to achieve that beach body before the summer season, find the hottest room in your place, switch off the AC, and close the windows.
Place your yoga mat on the floor and do your usual routine (and if you don’t have an existing routine, just Google up some yoga workouts and follow the instructions). Only this time, you’ll be doing hot yoga, and your heart, muscles, and lungs will work harder than when you practice yoga in a cold environment.
Yoga is a great discipline to make you focus on your breathing and inner wellness. Do it a few times a week and watch your transformation - not only physically, but your overall well-being as well.
Get some quality sleep
We know we’ve talked about getting out of bed even if you don’t feel like it. But getting a quality sleep (between six to eight hours a night) is just as important to maintain that summer body.
When we sleep, it’s our body’s chance to recharge, reset, and recover, especially if you spend an hour a day on your workout plan. Develop a sleep schedule that allows you to get plenty of rest, and see how ready your body will be for the next day’s workout.
