Glowing skin

The best skincare techniques for glowing skin

Did you know that glowing skin is the result of a healthy lifestyle? While using skincare products definitely helps, how you nourish and take care of yourself reflects on your skin. Many factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, unhealthy diet, age, and an overall unhealthy lifestyle cause our skin (the body's largest organ) to lose its radiance and glow.

But the good news is that we’ve uncovered the best skincare techniques you can incorporate into your daily routine that will keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Cleanse your skin twice a day

The first step in any skincare routine is to have thoroughly cleansed skin, which means you have to remove all deep-seated dirt, such as excess oil, makeup residue, pollution, and dead skin cells. Always wash your face in the morning and again in the evening with water and a gentle cleanser and then follow with a more penetrating deep cleanser. Don’t overdo it or you’ll strip your skin of essential oils and may find that your skin feels a bit dry.

Use some vitamin serums

Skin loves its’ vitamins, and in the mornings, a few drops of Vitamin C and Vitamin E serums will really add some vitality to your glow. Vitamin C helps to detoxify your skin, promotes even skin tone, reduces pigmentation and dark spots and promotes collagen. Vitamin E supports cell function and skin health, and has anti-inflammatory properties and fights signs of ageing. It can also help to reduce the effects of UV damage.

Stay hydrated

You’ve no doubt heard it a hundred times before, but keeping yourself well hydrated doesn’t only keep your skin glowing, it also cleanses your whole-body system. Grab yourself a cute water bottle or flask that you can bring with you anywhere you go. Don’t wait to be thirsty. Make it a habit to drink water all the time (at least 2 litres per day but 3 is better if you can manage it) and watch your skin radiate and glow.

Exfoliate your skin

As we age, our skin builds up dead cells in the dermal layer. Unfortunately, these cells don’t shed on their own, so exfoliating is something we all need to include in our skincare routine. You can choose to do this physically with an exfoliating scrub two or three times a week or use a facial peel product. If you have sensitive skin, you should only exfoliate once a week.

Get rid of uneven skin texture and colour

Speaking of dead skin cells, once they build up, they cause uneven skin texture and colour, and it’s one of the main reasons our skin doesn’t look as radiant as it once was. Besides exfoliation, to accelerate the skin cells’ natural turnover, it’s worth investing in a good vitamin A serum or retinol serum. Use this three times per week, and only at night.

Eat plenty of antioxidant-rich foods

Remember we said that glowing skin is a result of a healthy lifestyle? That means having a healthy diet too - and to keep your skin in great condition, it’s a good idea to incorporate into your diet food that is high in antioxidants, such as walnuts, pecans, berries, and grapes. Antioxidants in different foods have long been associated with protecting the skin from the damaging effect of UV rays. So, instead of grabbing a bag of chips when you watch your favourite TV show, have a bowl of delicious and juicy blueberries instead.

Have a good night's sleep

A healthy lifestyle includes getting a regular good night's sleep. Not once or twice a week, but every night, try to get 8 hours of sleep in. When we sleep, our skin heals naturally from whatever damage may have been inflicted on it during our waking hours and of course your whole body needs a good rest too.

Know when it’s time to consult a dermatologist

Use these tips and with consistency, you’ll achieve that glowing skin you’ve been dreaming of. However, if your skin problems are persistent – such as big or multiple dark spots, bad pigmentation, acne or sagging skin, you may need to consult with a professional. If you have ongoing skin concerns, ask your doctor for a referral to a local dermatologist.
