Three easy DIY tricks to fix holes or cracks in your home's walls
As your home gets older, the age of it starts to show, both inside and out. One area of your home that is vulnerable to wear and tear over time are your walls. As you walk through your home, you may see nail and screw holes that are unsightly; scuff marks; small cracks that have formed from your house settling naturally on the ground, or holes caused from door handles being banged into walls and so on.
These little flaws can cause any room to look unsightly, but there are easy fixes you can do yourself to make your walls look in tip top shape again? But before we share our tips, keep in mind that holes and cracks in your walls may be caused by certain defects like water damage. It’s always important to inspect the area thoroughly to make sure the damage is just superficial, before you start your repairs.
Follow these 3 easy DIY tricks to fix holes or cracks in your home’s walls!
- For small cracks and holes, pick up a small container of filler, a tool to spread it with, sandpaper and a sample size container of paint that matches your existing paint color. These items are inexpensive and you can easily fill the crack or hole yourself with the filler, then sand it down so it’s even with the rest of the wall and then simply apply a coat of paint. The hardest part is going to be finding paint that matches your current wall colour, especially if it’s been awhile since your home’s walls have been painted. This is why buying the sample size containers will help you save money as they are much less expensive than bigger containers.
- Hang wall art where the cracks or holes are. It can be wall art that you already have; a picture in a frame, or cheap wall art that you can buy at discount stores. Another great idea would be to pick up an inexpensive blank canvas and spend an evening with your kids painting something unique that your family can cherish forever.
- Cover the damaged area with wallpaper. For example, if there’s only one wall in a room that’s showing damage, one of the most popular trends right now is to have an “accent wall”. Wallpaper is also making a comeback, so the fix would be to simply paper the wall that is damaged. You can even buy textured wallpaper that will often hide minor flaws on the wall, and since you’re not buying a lot, this is a very affordable fix!
