Three home cleaning supplies you can make to save money

Home cleaning supplies purchased at the store are expensive and can easily cut into your monthly budget. What’s even worse is that you’re buying cleaning supplies that are in plastic containers that just get tossed out once the cleaning solution runs out. This system creates a waste of money and more unwanted rubbish.

Rather than purchasing pre-made home cleaning supplies, did you know you can make your own? Here are 3 home cleaning supplies you can make to save money!

1. Laundry Detergent - Laundry detergent can easily be made at home in either liquid or powder form. For the liquid, simply mix 473 mls of borax cleaner with 2 bars of grated soap and 473 mls of washing soda and mix together with 4 litres of boiling water. Stir the mixture well and make sure to keep the bucket covered when it’s not being used. Before each use, give it a stir as the mixture may gel up a bit in between uses.

To make powder detergent, grate 1 bar of soap into a pan and then add just enough hot water to cover the soap. Next, heat the mixture until the soap melts and combines smoothly with the water. Next, get a large bucket and pour 11 litres of hot water into it, then add the bar soap / water mixture that you just made into it. Stir this mixture together and then add in the washing soda. Cool the mixture until it’s ready to use.

Even though you’re spending money on a few ingredients, this recipe will make enough detergent that will last much longer than store bought brands will.

2. Floor Cleaner - Floor cleaner is easy to make yourself and it can be used on multiple floor types. All you need to do is mix 236 mls of hot water with 177 mls of vinegar and a few drops of liquid soap. Mix everything together in a reusable spray bottle and you’re ready to go! It’s always best to test a small piece of flooring first before cleaning the whole thing to make sure varnishes won’t be disturbed. You can also use this mixture on cabinets and other greasy surfaces.

3. Kitchen Counter | Surface Cleaner - Mix 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar and add in fresh lemon juice. This all natural cleaner can be used on kitchen bench tops and other surfaces such as in the bathroom. It’s cheap to make and the lemon scent also makes it smell great!

Start saving now by making your own cleaning supplies at home. You can easily make batches in bulk, which will not only last you longer, but will also save you money.
