Australia Day

Top things to do this Australia Day

Our national day is just around the corner and it’s the one day of the year when there are definitely no excuses needed to get out and celebrate this lucky country that we live in. While most of us will hit the beach, cruise along to the park or just amble over to the neighbour’s backyard, there are plenty of things you can do to make this Australia Day special. Here are a few of our favourites:

Host a barbie

It’s definitely not Australia Day food if there’s no BBQ in sight - so after you’ve headed down to the bottle-o for some coldies, fire up the barbie and cook up some of those traditional Aus Day favourites like lamb cutlets, prawns and sausages. Don’t forget the tommie sauce!

Play cricket

It’s un-Australian not to play cricket on Australia Day so use whatever’s handy to create some wickets, grab a bat and ball and a few friends and get out there for a few tosses. Definitely one of the best Australia Day activities!

Wave a flag

Nothing shows your affection for our beloved country more than giving our national flag a wave. Whether it’s hanging from a window, fixed to your car, printed on a beach towel or wrapped around the picnic table, be proud to show off your Australiana for all to see.

Toss a thong

Tossing the thong is the quintessential Australia Day sport. While the rules can vary, organising a bunch of mates to participate in this ancient and noble sport is guaranteed to bring lots of fun and laughter to your day.

Speak "Strine"

It’s our national day and no matter where you hail from there’s no excuse for not throwing in as much Aussie slang as you can into your day. You know you’re a local when you can abbreviate every word, most of which end with an ‘o’ - think arvo, rego, smoko, servo, garbo, bottle-o. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to throw another shrimp on the barbie, grab a slab and have fun with the grommets.

Make a pav

OK so our Kiwi cousins claim the humble pav as their own but we all know that this controversial plate of deliciousness originated from our fair shores. Smother it in cream, cover it with fruit and enjoy this sweet treat in the afternoon with another coldie.

Get an Aussie movie fix

There’s no better day to watch some of those Aussie cult classics that just seem to get better and better with age. If the weather’s not to your liking or if you’re just in the mood for vegging out in front of the telly, check out some great classics on demand like The Castle, The adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Muriel’s Wedding or Mad Max.

Watch the fireworks

Where ever you live in in this lucky country of ours, odds are there’ll be fireworks happening somewhere. Gather up your loved ones, grab a blanket and sit out under the stars to enjoy the view.
